Why “Overcomer”?
We refer to our participants as “Overcomers”. “Overcome” is defined as “to succeed and prevail.” We know that these children are not only facing a diagnosis, but everything else that comes along with that diagnosis. A child who is battling illness or a disability is overcoming feelings of isolation, helplessness, missed school, missed hobbies, bullying, medical treatments, hospitalizations, painful therapies, uncomfortable therapies, time away from family and friends, negative thoughts within themselves, negative stigmas from society, lack of accessible accommodations, a constant need to advocate, emotional/mental/ spiritual fatigue and so much more. Because of this and the resilience shown by these children and families through their medical journey, Overcomers is a recognition of strength and endurance.
